SSE Weekly Colloquium | 理工学院系列研讨会邀请
The School of Science and Engineering is committed to creating a platform for students and faculty members to exchange ideas and explore cutting-edge research developments in various fields of science and engineering. Starting from 2021 fall, SSE will organize the "Weekly Colloquium" series of seminars every Friday from 1:30 to 2:30 pm. Each week, SSE will invite our faculty members and distinguished guest speakers from outside the University to conduct academic seminars.
All students and faculty members are invited to join the weekly colloquium!

Abstract
Information is an abstract concept. We cannot touch information, but yet we are receiving and storing information every day. In this colloquium we illustrate the encoding and transmission of data through card tricks. The design of the card tricks is based on mathematical principles. There is no illusion, and no hidden card in the sleeves. The "magic" lies in the clever use of the mathematical structures, which could be a graph, or a numbering scheme. A typical trick is to ask the audience to pick a card, but do not reveal it to the magician. The magician asks several questions, and the answers are sufficient to determine the secret card. This is a kind of information transmission. Using the interactive card tricks, we will demonstrate data encoding, detection and correction of error, and some wonderment in discrete mathematics.

The Speaker
KennethShum is an Associate Professor in the School of Science and Engineering. He obtained his bachelor degree in the Shatin campus of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, and Master and PhD degree in University of Southern California. His main research area is information and coding theory. The research method usually involves algebra, combinatorics, graph theory, and number theory. In recent years he has been doing research on the design and analysis of encoding schemes for storing data in a networked system. The data encoding scheme is able to recover the lost data in failed hard disks, and thereby enhance the error tolerance in a large-scale cloud storage system.
School Profile
School of Science and Engineering is located in Shenzhen, a core city of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. Adhering to the rich CUHK's academic tradition with high emphasis on humanity elements, the School is committed to nurturing innovative technology leaders embracing China and the world with global visions and social responsibility.
As one of the founding schools of the University, SSE has so far offered 6 Undergraduate Programmes: Mathematics and Applied Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics (Approval Pending), Electronical and Computer Engineering, New Energy Science and Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering. 2 Taught Postgraduate Programmes: Supply Chain and Logistics Management, Communication Engineering. 5 Research Postgraduate Programmes/PhD programmes: Computer and Information Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, Energy Science and Engineering, Mathematics, Physics (Approval Pending). Following the lofty educational philosophy and sound academic system of CUHK, SSE and its extraordinary faculty from all over the world have produced a succession of outstanding graduates. Even under the complex international situation of the global pandemic, SSE graduates still secured a high employment rate.
This series of seminars is open to all students and faculty members, and no pre-registration is required. Let's learn about the beauty of science and engineering together!
